District Council Members’ Briefing – 29 October 2020

29 October 2020 6:00pm–7:00pm

Microsoft Teams

All our members who work at Selby, Hambleton and Richmondshire District Councils are invited to join this members’ meeting to talk about local government reorganisation. We want to share with our members what UNISON is doing both at branch level and regionally to make sure any reorganisation of our councils in North Yorkshire protects our members and their terms and conditions.

The meeting will take place via Microsoft Teams on Thursday 29 October between 6pm and 7pm. The link to the meeting has been sent to out all members who work at the three councils, and we hope that as many members as possible will be able to take part.

The government has now invited submissions from all the North Yorkshire councils, and the City of York. They have stipulated that any new structure for local government in the county must remain within the existing boundaries of North Yorkshire and York. We believe that there will be two proposals on the table – one from the district councils which will split the area in two, and one from the county council which will see York remain as it is and the rest of the county become one council.

All the local government branches of UNISON in North Yorkshire and York met a few months ago and agreed that our priorities are:

  1. Minimise disruption to staff and services
  2. Protect jobs and avoid compulsory redundancies
  3. Level-up terms and conditions

Our branch has looked at both proposals and has concluded that the NYCC proposal best meets the objectives above. We would like to explain to members why we think a ‘one council’ approach is best for our members, and to hear the views and ideas of affected members.

As there are more than 400 members working across the three councils it will be difficult to take live questions during the meeting, so please forward any questions in advance of the meeting to Daniel Maguire (the branch Communications Officer) by email no later than 5pm on Wednesday 28 October. During the meeting members will also be able to post questions in the chat window. We will try to answer as many questions as we can during the meeting, but if that is not possible we will send responses out to everyone after the meeting.

It is really important that we hear the views of our members so please try to join the meeting. You do not need to have Teams installed on your device, you can just click the link and open it in your normal internet browser.
