UNISON’s head of local government and schools says something has changed in our fight for a fair pay rise.

Our branch has joined calls for the government to provide further financial support for local councils who are at the forefront of the battle against Coronavirus.

Council workers across North Yorkshire paused for a minute silence yesterday, 28 April 2020, on International Workers’ Memorial Day, to remember workers who have lost their lives at work.

Unions welcome improved pay offer of 2.75% for local government and school workers, but call on the government to fund a further increase to help make up for the 20% reduction in pay over the last 10 years.

Hundreds of our members have volunteered to be deployed to different roles, or work different hours to support the Covid-19 response. We have signed a Memorandum of Understanding with NYCC to reassure members that these new arrangements are temporary.
