UNISON provides advice for safe reopening of libraries

Article updated on 7 July with additional resources at the bottom of the page

Following the government announcement that libraries can start to reopen from Saturday 4 July, UNISON held a webinar for members and workplace reps who work in libraries. We are pleased that a number of our branch members who work in North Yorkshire libraries were able to attend.

The webinar confirmed UNISON’s view that the earliest date from which libraries can reopen is 4 July, and even then it should be risk-based and a gradual reopening. Decisions about reopening libraries should be based on adequate risk assessments of each library.

The government has also indicated its support for a Library Service Recovery Kit which has been produced by Libraries Connected in partnership with Public Health England. We expect employers to follow this guidance as a minimum standard.

To help members we have produced a branch briefing and we are engaging with North Yorkshire County Council on appropriate risk assessments.
